More about this artwork

Maurice Pillard Verneuil's 1897 artwork, "Perroquets, aigle, bois sculpté. Cygnes et iris, porte en bois sculpté," reveals the artist's intricate engagement with nature and ornamental design, embodying the Art Nouveau movement's aesthetics. The top portion of the piece features three dramatic carvings of parrots; each bird is rendered with meticulous care, highlighting its distinctive feathers and powerful presence. The deep, thoughtful expressions of the parrots suggest a moment caught in serene contemplation. The lower part of the painting offers a contrasting scene with a lush depiction of a tranquil lakescape, where swans glide gracefully amid blooming irises. The detailed texture of the water, combined with the elegant forms of the swans and the vibrantly etched foliage, creates a peaceful yet vibrant tableau. This section captures the delicate balance between movement and stillness, showcasing Verneuil's skill in crafting visually harmonious and naturalistic scenes.Together, these elements of the artwork celebrate the beauty and complexity of wildlife, rendered through the artist's unique vision and exemplary execution in the art of wood carving.
