More about this artwork

The painting "Woman Holding Cats" by Edward Penfield portrays a serene and composed woman holding two cats. Her demeanor combined with her direct gaze gives her a dignified and almost regal appearance. The contrast between her calm expression and the dynamic, possibly wriggling forms of the cats adds a layer of narrative to the piece, suggesting a story about her relationship with the animals. The woman is depicted with dark hair styled neatly around her head, and a subtle yet notable neutral-colored dress that emphasizes the simplicity and clarity of Penfield's style. The cats—one with a predominantly white body accompanied by vibrant orange and black patches, and the other a sleek, predominantly black figure with white markings—stand out sharply against her attire and the light background. This distinctive coloring and patterning draw attention to the animals, making them key focal points in the composition. In terms of technique, Penfield uses clear, strong lines and blocks of color, typical of his style, which is informed by Art Nouveau and poster art influences. There is an economy of detail that focuses more on capturing the essence and mood rather than intricate detail. This picture, like much of Penfield’s artwork, has a graphic quality to it, highlighting its potential origins in illustration and poster design.Overall, the painting exudes a sense of peaceful coexistence between the woman and her cats, encapsulated effectively by Penfield's minimalist yet expressive style.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
