More about this artwork

"Cupid in the Clouds with Attendant Cherubs," executed in 1757 or later, is a captivating drawing by renowned Italian artist Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo. In this ethereal composition, the central figure of Cupid is vaulted into prominence, surrounded by a lively assemblage of attendant cherubs. These frolicking cherubs, rendered with dynamic strokes and fluid lines, appear to swirl around Cupid in a jovially chaotic cloud ballet, their wings fluttering with youthful energy. The artwork, rich in movement and expression, is skillfully executed using sepia tones which lend an air of timeless grace and warmth to the scene. Tiepolo's masterful use of ink and wash technique enhances the textural depth and dimensionality, giving life to the playful scene above the clouds. The cherubs' varied poses and expressions inject a sense of liveliness and individual character, making the drawing not only a study of mythological figures but also a celebration of celestial mirth. This piece beautifully encapsulates the Rococo style's whimsical and elaborate aesthetics, characterized by lightness, elegance, and an exuberant sense of movement.
