More about this artwork

Édouard Vuillard, a prominent figure in the introspective world of the Nabi group, masterfully captured mundane moments with remarkable emotional depth and intimacy. His painting "Woman Ironing" from 1892 stands as a poignant exemplar, delving into the quiet domestic life that was often a central theme in his work.In this understated yet evocative piece, Vuillard portrays a woman engrossed in the task of ironing. The composition is intimate, focusing closely on the woman who is seen from the side. Her figure is simplified and rendered with soft, muted tones that blend harmoniously with her surroundings, emphasizing a sense of quiet monotony and absorption in her chore. The environment around her is indistinct, sketched with broad strokes of earthy colors that suggest the walls of a humble room, enhancing the focus on her solitary activity.Vuillard's use of light and shadow subtly models the forms, creating volume and adding a tactile quality to the woman's attire and the ironing board. The artist’s characteristic textured application of paint adds a palpable weight to the everyday scene, inviting viewers to ponder the inner thoughts of the woman whose face remains obscured, veiled in concentration."Woman Ironing" not only reflects Vuillard's skill in depicting the serenity and the spirituality of home life but also serves as a sensitive portrayal of the often-overlooked labors that define the rhythm of daily existence.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
