More about this artwork

In the evocative painting "Les deux belles-soeurs" by Édouard Vuillard, the viewer is invited into an intimate domestic scene that is rich with textural and color depth. Created between 1898 and 1899, this piece exemplifies Vuillard's mastery in capturing the subtleties of indoor life and personal relationships through his use of patterns and muted palettes. This composition features two women, presumably sisters-in-law, engaging in a quiet moment together. The figure on the left is partially obscured, conveying perhaps a sense of distance or reticence, her face gently turned towards her companion. The woman on the right, dressed in a rich, dark gown, sits near a table, her profile forming a strong, contemplative silhouette against the intricately patterned, yellow floral wallpaper. This bright background contrasts starkly with the dark tones of her attire, emphasizing her thoughtful demeanor. The interior space is characterized by Vuillard's characteristic attention to detail: the vividness of the wallpaper, the delicate spots on the left figure's dress, and the small, ornamental details like the vase atop the table. These elements collectively create a cozy, yet psychologically complex setting that encourages viewers to ponder the relationship dynamics and inner worlds of the figures portrayed."Les deux belles-soeurs" not only offers a glimpse into the private, everyday moments of its subjects but also highlights Vuillard's unique ability to blend personal narrative with decorative style, making it a compelling piece for both art lovers and casual viewers alike.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
