More about this artwork

In the exquisite artwork "Console in the shape of a male head (portrait of T. Stryjeński)" created in 1890, master artist Jan Matejko presents an innovative blend of architectural design and portrait painting. This artwork showcases the head of Tadeusz Stryjeński, vividly captured with a detailed and realistic expression, embedded within an ornate architectural column, beautifully adorned with vibrant colors and floral motifs at its capital. The portrait is poised within the column as if it were a part of the structure, suggesting an intriguing metaphor perhaps of the subject’s character being foundational or integral, much like a supporting pillar in architecture. Stryjeński's gaze is direct and engaging, his eyes seemingly reflecting a story of intellect and contemplation. His finely detailed beard and the naturalistic portrayal of his skin tones highlight Matejko’s skillful hand and keen eye for detail.

Jan Alojzy Matejko was a Polish painter, a leading 19th-century exponent of history painting, known for depicting nodal events from Polish history. His works include large scale oil paintings such as Rejtan (1866), the Union of Lublin (1869), the Astronomer Copernicus, or Conversations with God (1873), or the Battle of Grunwald (1878). He was the author of numerous portraits, a gallery of Polish monarchs in book form, and murals in St. Mary's Basilica, Kraków. He is considered by many as the most celebrated Polish painter, and sometimes as the "national painter" of Poland.
