More about this artwork

John William Godward, a name synonymous with the Neoclassical genre, captures a moment of timeless elegance and ponderous beauty in "The Signal" painted in 1899. This painting showcases Godward's mastery in illustrating the serene and idealized world of the ancient times. The painting depicts a young woman perched gracefully on a marble parapet, her figure draped in flowing robes of rich red and ornate gold. She shields her eyes from the sun, peering into the distant horizon over a tranquil body of water, surrounded by a lush, picturesque landscape. Her posture and expression evoke a blend of anticipation and wistful longing, as if she is waiting for a sign or perhaps the return of someone dear to her heart.Godward's exceptional attention to detail is evident not only in the intricate folds of the woman’s attire and the delicate texturing of the marble but also in the realistic portrayal of the natural landscape beyond. The clarity of the water, the finely rendered trees, and the distant mountains contribute to a sense of depth and serenity that enhances the overall ambiance of hopeful expectation."The Signal" is a work of profound beauty that invites viewers to a contemplative narrative, prompting them to envisage the story behind the woman's wait.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
