More about this artwork

"Love and Psyche" by William Bouguereau is a stirring work of art that beautifully showcases the artist's skill in figure painting and his fascination with classical themes. Painted in 1899, this piece represents the tender embrace of the mythological figures Cupid and Psyche, enveloped in a divine swirl of clouds. The painting depicts Psyche, known for her extraordinary beauty, being gently held by Cupid, the god of love. Psyche is portrayed in a state of serene vulnerability, her body gracefully arched as she is carried aloft. Cupid, with his wings outstretched and protective, displays a look of deep affection towards her. The use of light and shadow masterfully highlights the smoothness of their skin and the delicate textures of the fabrics. Bouguereau's technique gives the figures a lifelike and ethereal quality, seeming to float against the backdrop of a soft, blue sky.The composition and the emotive interaction between the characters bring to life the story of their love—tested but ultimately triumphant. This painting not only exemplifies Bouguereau's romantic style but also serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of classical mythology in art.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
