More about this artwork
This painting by Amedeo Modigliani, titled "Chaim Soutine," is a striking portrait of the artist's friend and fellow painter. The work exemplifies Modigliani's unique style, characterized by elongated forms and faces. In the portrait, Soutine is depicted with a slender face, marked by Modigliani's signature almond-shaped eyes, long nose, and pursed lips, which convey a pensively introspective air.The colors are muted, predominantly consisting of earth tones with a textured background in shades of gray and blue that suggest a vague, undefined space, focusing the viewer's attention more on the subject. Soutine is dressed in a dark suit with a white shirt showing at the collar, seated, with his hands clasped in front of him, adding to his reflective pose. The composition and brushwork give the painting an almost raw, emotional quality, which is reflective of both Modigliani’s expressionistic style and his deep personal connection with Soutine. The loosely defined, almost sketchy outlines blend subtly into the background, emphasizing the figure's introspective nature, while also illustrating Modigliani's focus on the soul and personality of his subjects rather than strict physical likeness.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard Munch, Paul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
