More about this artwork

"Golden Cup" from The Flower Book by Edward Burne-Jones is a captivating work that features a graceful angelic figure cradling a golden cup. Placed in a circular vignette, the artwork immerses the viewer in a dreamlike, ethereal setting. The angel, draped in a flowing blue robe with golden accents, exhibits a serene presence amidst a backdrop of tall, slender grasses or reeds that dominate the scene. These plants rise up around the figure and contribute to a sense of seclusion and mystique. The angel’s wings, beautifully detailed and expansive, echo the tones of the robe, emphasizing celestial serenity.Holding the golden cup delicately in both hands, the angel appears to be transporting or protecting this precious object, which gleams with a light of its own, suggesting importance or sacredness. The reeds around are tinted with golden hues, coordinating with the cup and providing a harmonious visual connection within the piece.Edward Burne-Jones, known for his Pre-Raphaelite style, often infused his compositions with romanticism and mythological elements, as clearly illustrated in this piece. The rich, finely detailed execution and the symbolic use of the golden cup perhaps allude to themes of sacrifice, purity, or divinity—common motifs in Burne-Jones’s works.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
