More about this artwork

"Head of a Woman" by Edward Burne-Jones is an exquisite drawing that captures a soft, contemplative expression of a woman's face. This piece is rendered with delicate, fine lines primarily using a red chalk medium, which imparts a warm, sensitive quality to the portrait. The woman's gaze is directed downward, reflecting a mood of introspection or melancholy, characteristic of Burne-Jones's style which often delved into ethereal and romantic subjects. The artist has focused on the graceful contours of the woman’s profile, her forehead, nose, and lips, while the rest of her body is suggested with lighter, less defined strokes. Her hair is styled simply, swept back from her forehead, emphasizing the gentleness of her expression and the smoothness of her skin. This artwork is typical of Burne-Jones’s works, where the beauty and subtlety of human expressions are explored in depth. It is a fine demonstration of his skill in portraiture and his ability to convey deep, emotional narratives through subtle gestures and soft detailing. The monochromatic choice of color enhances the timeless and universal appeal of the subject, making it a profound piece that speaks to the viewer on an intimate level.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
