More about this artwork

In "Quest for the Holy Grail - Study for The Summons" by Edward Burne-Jones, we observe a significant preparatory moment before the grand adventure in pursuit of the Holy Grail. The painting is a scene rich with narrative depth and allegorical elements, drawn in a style that is distinctly reflective of Burne-Jones' involvement with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, known for its complex compositions, attention to detail, and an almost mystical quality. This particular work features a group of figures, likely representing knights of the Arthurian legend, gathered around a central figure who appears to be receiving instructions or a summons. The setting is a hall-like room, dimly lit, evoking an atmosphere of solemnity and anticipation. To the right of the painting, a woman with a foreboding expression leads a horse, perhaps indicating readiness for immediate departure, symbolizing the beginning of the quest. The use of muted colors and the fluid, dreamlike quality of the figures are typical of Burne-Jones’ work, enveloping the scene in a sense of timelessness and gravity. The figures, though sketchily drawn, convey a wide range of emotions from contemplation to determination, adding to the narrative tension of the scene. Each element, from the sparse furnishings to the subtly depicted armor, plays a role in underlining the theme of medieval chivalry and the spiritual and moral trials associated with the quest for the Holy Grail.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
