More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Burne-Jones, titled "Witch's Tree" from The Flower Book, is a captivating illustration set within a circular frame. It depicts two figures seemingly deep in conversation or contemplation amidst a lush, florally adorned setting. The scene is rich with intricate details and a vibrant palette that captures the essence of a mystical or fairy tale setting. One figure is dressed in a dark, flowing cloak with their head bowed, suggesting a sense of introspection or sorrow. The other figure, also cloaked, faces them, adding to the intimate and somewhat secretive nature of the interaction. The background is dense with what appears to be white flowers and green foliage, enveloping the characters in a natural, almost otherworldly environment. The tree branches twist around the scene, enhancing the painting’s ethereal and magical quality.Overall, Burne-Jones' artwork here is typical of his style, emphasizing romanticism and the beauty of the natural world intertwined with human emotion and mythological themes. It's a visually engaging piece that invites the viewer to ponder the story and the relationship between the characters depicted.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
