More about this artwork

This painting, "Traveller's Joy," is a reflective and allegorical work by Edward Burne-Jones featured in The Flower Book. It depicts a circular scene with three figures set in a rugged mountainous landscape. The overall composition presents a narrative of travel and possibly spiritual or emotional discovery. On the left side of the circle, a figure draped in a long orange robe stands partially turned away, appearing contemplative or observant of the landscape. Opposite, on the right, another figure in a blue robe seems to be just arriving, peering towards the center of the image where a small cottage sits nestled in the valley, possibly the destination or a waypoint in their journey. In the foreground, a smaller figure cloaked in red faces away from the viewer, adding to the sense of journey as the individual could be seen as either departing or progressing forward along the path that winds through the scene. The color palette used is rich with earthy tones, emphasizing the natural setting and perhaps symbolizing different stages or emotions encountered during travel. The title "Traveller's Joy" can imply literally the joy found in travelling, or possibly refer to the plant of the same name, known for clinging and climbing much like a traveler might navigate a journey, encountering various conditions along the way.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
