More about this artwork

This painting titled "Two Figures and Cupid" by Jules Pascin showcases an intriguing and somewhat whimsical scene set against a dark, cloud-like background that contrasts sharply with a patterned border that might remind one of tiles or a decorative floor. The painting contains three figures in a dynamic and somewhat surreal composition. At the center, we see two human figures. The first figure is a woman depicted in a relaxed reclining pose on a sofa-like structure; she is portrayed with an exaggerated and somewhat ethereal form, her body curving sinuously. Her nakedness is only partially obscured by shadow and subtle color, with a light blue flower adorning her wavy hair, adding a touch of vibrancy to her otherwise pale skin tone. The second figure is a man, seated beside the sofa, in a striped sailor-like shirt and dark pants. He leans over, his pose suggesting engagement or perhaps exhaustion, as his head rests in one hand while the other seems to be interacting or touching the sofa or the area near the woman, which introduces a narrative of intimacy or contemplation.Floating above them in a swirl of cloud is a figure of Cupid, animated and cherubic, contributing to the mythological or dream-like ambiance of the scene.

Nudes, street scenes and landscapes of women and tropical locations by Bulgarian-born American painter Jules Pascin (1885-1930). Born to an affluent family, Pascin was educated in Austria and Germany before moving to Paris in 1905. It was there that he became associated with the Modernist movement. He attached himself to the human condition and was known for painting portraits of nude and half-dressed women. He stands in the grand tradition of the romantic, bohemian artist.
