More about this artwork
The painting "The Rest on the Flight into Egypt" by Lucas Cranach the Elder beautifully portrays a biblical scene from the New Testament, capturing a moment during the Holy Family's flight to Egypt. This work, imbued with Renaissance era nuances, showcases distinct elements that evoke both spiritual themes and a deep appreciation for natural landscapes. In the foreground, we see the Virgin Mary, dressed in a vibrant red robe, cradling the infant Jesus. Her serene expression and the way she gently interacts with Child Jesus emphasize her role as a nurturing mother and a central figure of devotion. Sitting beside her, slightly set back, is the angelic figure, adoringly playing with Jesus. The interplay between these figures suggests a moment of divine intimacy and maternal affection.Beside Mary stands Saint Joseph, depicted as an elderly man with a white beard, garbed in a dark green robe with a red cloak, observing the scene. He serves as a protective figure in the narrative, often considered as the guide and caretaker of the Holy Family during their perilous journey. The scene is further enriched by the presence of several cherubs and angels, infused with a lively, whimsical air, surrounding Mary and Jesus. These angelic beings add a layer of celestial blessing to the scene.
