More about this artwork

In the vibrant and expressive painting "Parc à la Havanne" created in 1917 by the celebrated artist Jules Pascin, viewers are swept into a dynamic, almost carnival-like atmosphere, capturing a moment of lively social interaction in what appears to be a bustling park setting in Havana. The painting is characterized by its fluid, sketch-like lines and a wash of subtle yet effective colors, which convey motion and emotion, blending figures with the lush landscapes that surround them.Pascin's work here portrays a range of figures, each rendered in a style that straddles the boundary between abstraction and figuration. The characters, though lightly detailed, are vivid in their postures and activities: from dancing women in the center, marked by flowing dresses and lively stances, to musicians and onlookers, each adds to the overall sense of movement and joy. The background is constituted of loosely depicted trees and clouds, using blues, greens, and grays, enhancing the dreamlike quality of the scene."Parc à la Havanne" is not just a portrayal of a public space but rather a celebration of culture and everyday life, encapsulating the spirit of Havana with a poetic and slightly whimsical touch.

Nudes, street scenes and landscapes of women and tropical locations by Bulgarian-born American painter Jules Pascin (1885-1930). Born to an affluent family, Pascin was educated in Austria and Germany before moving to Paris in 1905. It was there that he became associated with the Modernist movement. He attached himself to the human condition and was known for painting portraits of nude and half-dressed women. He stands in the grand tradition of the romantic, bohemian artist.
