More about this artwork
This ink and wash painting by Jules Pascin, titled "Figures With Cab," captures a lively street scene, depicted with a loose, expressive style that is characteristic of the artist. The composition portrays a horse-drawn cab dominating the center of the scene. The cab, drawn in dark ink, contrasts strikingly against the lighter background, directing focus towards its occupants and the horse.A driver, appareled in a hat and suit, is seated at the front of the cab, holding the reins and a whip, suggesting motion or the anticipation of movement. The horse, depicted with fluid, sweeping strokes, has a strong yet elegant form, emphasizing its role as a beast of burden. On the right side of the painting, a woman appears to be either entering or interacting with someone inside the cab. Her posture and extended arm create a sense of action and engagement.Surrounding the cab are various figures, possibly bystanders or passengers, sketched with minimal detail yet effectively conveying human presence and interest in the scene. There is a sense of casual observation by these figures, as if they are part of everyday city life.Pascin's use of wash techniques creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, adding a sense of depth and atmosphere to the scene. The sparse use of backdrop elements, like cloud or smoke forms, and the open space around the subjects, suggest an urban setting without confining the scene to a specific location.

Nudes, street scenes and landscapes of women and tropical locations by Bulgarian-born American painter Jules Pascin (1885-1930). Born to an affluent family, Pascin was educated in Austria and Germany before moving to Paris in 1905. It was there that he became associated with the Modernist movement. He attached himself to the human condition and was known for painting portraits of nude and half-dressed women. He stands in the grand tradition of the romantic, bohemian artist.
