More about this artwork

The painting titled "Male Model, Study, 1874 - 1875" by Albert Edelfelt features a strong, expressive portrait of a male model. This oil on canvas artwork shows a physically toned man in a robust stature. The model is portrayed with his torso uncovered, revealing his muscular structure and a dynamic pose that is both heroic and natural. His posture, with one arm akimbo and the other holding what appears to be a thin staff or stick, suggests a classical pose that artists often used in historical and mythological paintings to depict strength and vigour. The model's gaze is directed off to the side, giving him an introspective or contemplative demeanor, which contrasts with the physical assertiveness of his pose.Edelfelt's use of brushwork is notable, with loose, visible strokes that add a sense of immediacy and texture. The predominantly dark, muted background focuses our attention on the figure, highlighting the flesh tones and the play of light across his muscular form. The artist’s skill in rendering the human anatomy is evident, capturing not just the physical presence but also a sense of the model’s character and possibly his inner life. This painting is an excellent example of Edelfelt’s mastery in capturing human figures with emotional depth and realism.
