More about this artwork
"Place Du Carrousel, Paris" by Camille Pissarro is an impressionist painting depicting a bustling, vibrant scene set against the iconic backdrop of Parisian architecture. The painting captures a sunny day at the Place du Carrousel, an open square situated between the Louvre Museum and the Tuileries Gardens. In the foreground, we see a lively gathering of people. These individuals, painted in quick, thick brushstrokes, appear to be enjoying a leisurely day out, with some walking, some gathered in small groups, perhaps chatting or observing their surroundings. The variety of colors in their clothing adds a dynamic and joyful quality to the scene.Lush green trees frame this scene beautifully, their leaves rendered with dabs of vibrant green that suggest the fullness of summer foliage. These trees not only add color and life to the setting but also create a natural contrast with the built environment. The background is dominated by the grand, majestic buildings of the Louvre, their detailed facades elegantly illustrated despite the loose brushwork typical of impressionism.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro
Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
