More about this artwork
In this painting, there is a large, circular basket rendered in dark strokes with an intricately interwoven, lattice-like design. The gaps in the lattice are filled with glimpses of lush green foliage and speckles of white and yellow, suggesting the presence of flowers subtly peering through. A small, detailed butterfly can be seen atop the foliage, adding a touch of life and delicacy to the composition. The background is a muted, soft beige, which helps in highlighting the basket and its contents.

Kamisaka Sekka was an important artistic figure in early twentieth-century Japan. Born in Kyoto to a Samurai family, his talents for art and design were recognized early. He eventually allied himself with the traditional Rinpa school of art. He is considered the last great proponent of this artistic tradition.
