More about this artwork
In a striking use of color and form, the painting showcases a person with black hair in a blue kimono, reclining while playing a slender, horizontal flute. Beside this figure is the sizeable, gentle silhouette of an ox, rendered mostly in black with visible white eyes and white, sharp-tipped horns. Both figures are against a minimalist backdrop that highlights their interaction.

Kamisaka Sekka was an important artistic figure in early twentieth-century Japan. Born in Kyoto to a Samurai family, his talents for art and design were recognized early. He eventually allied himself with the traditional Rinpa school of art. He is considered the last great proponent of this artistic tradition.
