More about this artwork

This painting by Odilon Redon, titled "Nasturtiums," showcases a vibrant and somewhat abstract display of nasturtium flowers and leaves. The artwork is an explosion of rich, warm colors, predominantly in shades of orange and red, complemented by cooler tones of green. The background hue is a muted mix, somewhere between a rusty orange and a warm terra cotta, which softly blends into areas of pale yellow and gold.Redon's technique here blurs the line between realism and impressionism, focusing on the overall emotional impact of the color palette rather than detailed botanical accuracy. The flowers and leaves appear to be densely clustered, overlapping each other in a lush, organic profusion that almost seems to move before the viewer's eyes. This effect is enhanced by the use of light and texture; the vividness of the flowers is juxtaposed with the shimmering, almost ethereal quality of some of the leaves and background elements, suggesting a dreamlike or mystical dimension to the natural scene.Overall, "Nasturtiums" by Redon is a stunning example of the artist's skill in using color and form to evoke a powerful emotional and sensory response, capturing not just the visual beauty of flowers but also an essence of their wild, untamed nature.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
