More about this artwork

"Evocation of Roussel" by Odilon Redon is a vivid and enchanting artwork that showcases the distinct style of the Symbolist movement. The painting features a central bearded male figure, surrounded by a striking yet delicate array of flowers. These blossoms appear in a luminous spread of shapes and colors, contrasting dramatically with the figure's intense, contemplative expression. The color palette is predominantly soft and ethereal, with gentle blues and tender golds creating a dreamlike background that seems to merge sky and earth on the same plane. The texture of the painting has a tactile quality, with visible brush strokes and layers of color that add depth and intensity to the composition.Redon's work often explores the theme of the inner mind and spirit, and this painting may be seen as an homage or evocation of the character Roussel, possibly invoking the person's thoughts, emotions, or spiritual aura. The use of flora around the character is particularly noteworthy, as it suggests a union of the natural world with the depths of human emotion and thought.Overall, this painting is an exquisite example of how Redon masterfully combines color, form, and symbolism to delve into the realms of the psychological and the speculative, encouraging viewers to explore their own interpretations and emotional reactions.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
