More about this artwork

This intriguing work by Odilon Redon, titled "Strange Flower," presents a dreamlike and somewhat unsettling image that merges elements of the surreal and the fantastical. At the center of the composition is a human face, emotionally neutral and somewhat enigmatic, that appears where one would typically expect the bloom of a flower. This face is connected to a slender, dark stalk that roots the visage in what seems like a dark abyss or clouded atmosphere. The face is detailed with clear, striking eyes that stare directly at the viewer, creating an intense encounter. The surrounding environment is less defined, with a smoky or misty quality that adds to the overall mysterious and surreal feeling of the piece. Below the face and stem, there are leaf-like forms that could be seen as part of this "strange flower" or perhaps other foliage emerging from the darkness.Redon's work often explores themes of fantasy, and he is known for his use of dark and light contrasts, as well as his ability to blur the lines between the real and the unimaginable. In "Strange Flower," the juxtaposition of a human face with the elements of a plant invites viewers to contemplate themes of nature, humanity, and transformation. The choice of monochrome adds a timeless, universal quality to the artwork, focusing attention more on the forms and symbolic potential rather than the distractions of color.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
