More about this artwork

The painting "The Chariot of Apollo" by Odilon Redon is a beautiful and ethereal depiction of the mythological sun god, Apollo, driving his chariot. The artwork is a rich tapestry of dream-like quality, imbued with soft, pastel colors that contribute to a sense of otherworldliness. In this composition, Apollo is not directly visible; instead, the focus is on the magnificent horses that pull his chariot across the sky. These horses are rendered in a dynamic, almost fluid motion, with their forms slightly blurred and merging into the clouds around them, which enhances the sense of movement and the ethereal nature of the scene. The horses appear to be ascending or in mid leap, captured in a moment of weightlessness, with their bodies twisted and limbs extended, suggesting a powerful and graceful motion through the heavens. The background is a wash of muted blues and greens, representing the sky, which seamlessly blends into what could be the soft glow of a distant sunrise or sunset on the horizon. The delicate handling of light and color helps to create a peaceful and serene atmosphere, enveloping the viewer in a tranquil, heavenly realm. The chariot itself is portrayed quite minimally and appears almost toy-like compared to the grandeur of the horses.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
