More about this artwork

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, a master of the Italian Baroque, is celebrated for his dynamic brushwork and innovative etching techniques. This remarkable work, "Head of a Man (possibly a self-portrait)," created around 1645-1650, showcases Castiglione’s adept skill in capturing human emotion and character. The etching reveals the head of a man, possibly the artist himself, garbed in a period hat and adorned with locks of curling, textured hair that frame his intense gaze and finely detailed facial features. The subject's expression is contemplative, bearing a gaze that seems to reach beyond the confines of the frame, suggesting introspection or a distant focus. The attire and soft, amorphous hat are typical of the mid-17th century style, adding a touch of historical context to the portrait. Castiglione's use of light and shadow not only highlights the physical contours of the face but also adds a dramatic effect that enhances the overall emotional depth of the portrait. This etching is not only a study of a face but a powerful representation of human emotion and a reflection of the self, qualities that make Castiglione’s works profoundly touching and timeless.

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (23 March 1609 – 5 May 1664) was an Italian Baroque painter, printmaker and draftsman, of the Genoese school. He is best known now for his etchings, and as the inventor of the printmaking technique of monotyping. He was known as Il Grechetto in Italy and in France as Le Benédette.

He painted portraits, history paintings and landscapes, but came to specialize in rural scenes with more animals than human figures. Noah's ark and the animals entering the Ark was a favourite subject of his, and he devised a number of other new subjects from the early parts of the Old Testament with the patriarchs and their animals.
