More about this artwork

"Explore the intriguing artistry of the 17th century through Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione's masterpiece, 'Young Man in Profile' (circa 1645-1650). Infused with a raw, dynamic energy, this etching captures the essence of its subject with striking immediacy and finesse. The young man, rendered in sharp profile, is dressed lavishly, his attire adorned with feathers and other rich details that epitomize the style of the era. Castiglione's skillful handling of the etching needle creates a textural depth that conveys not just the visual but the tactile qualities of the feathers and fabric. An artist renowned for his inventive approach to printmaking, Castiglione imbues this portrait with a life-like presence that invites viewers to ponder the personality and life of the subject. The contrast between the detailed rendering of the young man's features and attire against the minimalistic background enhances the focal impact of the portrait, making it a captivating study of form, fashion, and identity during the Baroque period."This remarkable etching provides a fascinating glimpse into the artistic conventions of the 17th century, while also highlighting Castiglione's unique contributions to the world of art.

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (23 March 1609 – 5 May 1664) was an Italian Baroque painter, printmaker and draftsman, of the Genoese school. He is best known now for his etchings, and as the inventor of the printmaking technique of monotyping. He was known as Il Grechetto in Italy and in France as Le Benédette.

He painted portraits, history paintings and landscapes, but came to specialize in rural scenes with more animals than human figures. Noah's ark and the animals entering the Ark was a favourite subject of his, and he devised a number of other new subjects from the early parts of the Old Testament with the patriarchs and their animals.
