More about this artwork

Our latest feature is a captivating etching by the distinguished Italian artist Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, executed around 1645-1650. This piece, titled "Young Man in Profile Facing Right," illustrates Castiglione's mastery in the art of printmaking and character study. This etching depicts a young man viewed in profile, his face turned towards the right. The young man dons a soft, flowing beret, which is a typical fashion element of the period, adding an element of depth and context to the portrait. His facial features are finely detailed, with sharp, contemplative eyes and a nose that casts a slight shadow over his face, suggesting the directional light typical of baroque artworks.Castiglione's skillful use of line in the etching technique is evident here; the varying thickness and density of lines not only define the form but also convey texture and volume. The artist achieves a vivid portrayal of the youth’s curly hair and fabric folds of his clothing, which seem almost tangible. The artwork’s expression also suggests a moment of deep thought or introspection, inviting viewers to ponder what thoughts may occupy the young man. This introspective quality, combined with the meticulous detail and dynamic composition, makes "Young Man in Profile Facing Right" not only a striking visual statement but also a compelling narrative piece.Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione was renowned for his innovative approaches in etching, and this work is a beautiful representation of his technique and artistic sensitivity.

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (23 March 1609 – 5 May 1664) was an Italian Baroque painter, printmaker and draftsman, of the Genoese school. He is best known now for his etchings, and as the inventor of the printmaking technique of monotyping. He was known as Il Grechetto in Italy and in France as Le Benédette.

He painted portraits, history paintings and landscapes, but came to specialize in rural scenes with more animals than human figures. Noah's ark and the animals entering the Ark was a favourite subject of his, and he devised a number of other new subjects from the early parts of the Old Testament with the patriarchs and their animals.
