More about this artwork

Stanislas Lépine's painting, "Les Hauteurs de Meudon," created in 1884, captures a serene landscape filled with the lush greenery of the French countryside. The scene is set in Meudon, a suburban area near Paris known for its scenic beauty and tranquil atmosphere. In this artwork, Lépine adeptly portrays a panoramic view of rolling fields and dense patches of trees that lead the viewer's eye towards a distant town speckled with buildings, the subtle forms of which dissolve into the hazy atmosphere. The foreground features a varied texture of greenery, from leafy trees to fields dotted with wildflowers and shrubs, which showcase Lépine’s meticulous attention to the detail and vibrancy of nature.Central to the pastoral theme, a horse-drawn cart and figures in period attire can be seen on a winding path, adding a human element to the natural setting. This inclusion not only brings life to the painting but also reflects the harmonious coexistence of man and nature. The soft, diffused light and the delicate brushwork create a tranquil and almost dream-like depiction of the landscape, inviting contemplation and appreciation for the serene moments captured on canvas."Les Hauteurs de Meudon" stands as a testament to Lépine's mastery in landscape painting, illustrious use of light, and his ability to evoke emotion through nuanced details.

Stanislas Victor Edouard Lépine was a French painter who specialized in landscapes, especially views of the Seine.

Lépine was born in Caen. An important influence in his artistic formation was Corot, whom he met in Normandy in 1859, becoming his student the following year.

Lépine's favorite subject was the Seine, which he was to paint in all its aspects for the rest of his life.
