More about this artwork

Artist: Stanislas Lépine"Figures In The Snow, La Rue Cortot, Montmartre" by Stanislas Lépine captures a serene winter moment on the streets of Montmartre, a historic district in Paris known for its bohemian spirit. In this painting, Lépine masterfully depicts a snowy day with muted colors and delicate brushwork, creating a soft, almost ethereal atmosphere. The composition focuses on a few figures braving the cold, snowy weather. The snow covers the ground and rooftops, blanketing the scene in white and emphasizing the chill of winter. The somber gray skies and the haze in the air suggest the quietness of a snowy day, where sounds are muffled and the pace of life slows down. The foreground features figures making their way through the snow, their forms slightly blurred, emphasizing the harsh winter weather. These individuals, bundled in warm garments, provide a human element and scale to the landscape. The buildings lining the street frame the scene, leading the viewer's eye deeper into the painting, towards the faint outlines of bare trees and possibly other distant structures.Lépine's use of light and shadow, along with his textured paint application, adds depth and realism to the scene. This painting not only captures the physical attributes of a snowy day in Montmartre but also evokes the solitude and introspective mood that often accompanies winter.

Stanislas Victor Edouard Lépine was a French painter who specialized in landscapes, especially views of the Seine.

Lépine was born in Caen. An important influence in his artistic formation was Corot, whom he met in Normandy in 1859, becoming his student the following year.

Lépine's favorite subject was the Seine, which he was to paint in all its aspects for the rest of his life.
