More about this artwork

"Le puits artésien de Grenelle, (place de Breteuil)" is an evocative masterpiece by the influential French artist Stanislas Lépine, dated 1880. The painting captures a serene yet bustling scene at Place de Breteuil in Paris, focused on the impressive structure of the Grenelle artesian well.Lépine's use of soft brushstrokes and a muted color palette conveys a hazy, atmospheric quality that is reminiscent of a quiet morning. The central feature, the artesian well, stands tall and dignified against a sky washed in blue and white hues, suggesting either the early morning mist or a dusky evening glow. This structure, with its intricate detailing and industrial elegance, draws the viewer's eye upward, symbolizing perhaps the triumph of human engineering over natural resources. The foreground of the painting is animated with daily life; figures are depicted in mid-motion. To the left, a solitary man stands, possibly observing the well or perhaps lost in his own thoughts. To the right, another figure leads a horse-drawn cart, adding a sense of daily routine and livelihood to the scene. These human elements provide a stark contrast to the imposing static structure of the well, reminding the viewer of the scale and impact of such constructions on everyday life. The soft, impressionistic style of Lépine not only captures the physical attributes of the scene but also evokes the transient nature of human presence against the backdrop of enduring architectural feats.

Stanislas Victor Edouard Lépine was a French painter who specialized in landscapes, especially views of the Seine.

Lépine was born in Caen. An important influence in his artistic formation was Corot, whom he met in Normandy in 1859, becoming his student the following year.

Lépine's favorite subject was the Seine, which he was to paint in all its aspects for the rest of his life.
