More about this artwork

"Winterscene, Stockholm" by Eugène Jansson is a mesmerizing dive into the frosty embrace of the Swedish winter between 1891 and 1893. This piece is distinctive of Jansson's deep fascination with the play of light and subtle shifts in coloring during twilight hours. The painting captures a serene, almost untouched snow-covered landscape in Stockholm, with its gentle hues of twilight casting a soft glow over buildings and barren trees. Prominently, the cold yet inviting scene paints an image of peaceful solitude. The buildings and structures are depicted with soft edges, suggesting the muffling effect of the heavy snow. A frozen water expanse stretches in the background, enhancing the feel of a vast, quiet cold. The tree bereft of leaves, outlined against the muted sky, adds a poignant touch of winter’s impact.

Eugène Fredrik Jansson (18 March 1862, Stockholm – 15 June 1915, Skara) was a Swedish painter known for his night-time land- and cityscapes dominated by shades of blue. Towards the end of his life, from about 1904, he mainly painted male nudes. The earlier of these phases has caused him to sometimes be referred to as blåmålaren, "the blue-painter".
