More about this artwork

"The Outskirts of the Town" is a mesmerizing landscape painting by Swedish artist Eugène Jansson, dated to 1899. This work exquisitely captures a unique blend of natural and urban elements at the boundary where city meets countryside. In the painting, the viewer's eye is drawn to a large, elongated building that dominates the composition. Its pale facade stands out starkly against the more somber tones of the twilight sky. The building's repetitive rows of windows suggest it might be a large residence or an institutional structure, evoking a sense of isolation despite its magnitude. The foreground of the painting is consumed by an expansive field, marked by swirling patterns that suggest tilled earth, leading up to a patch of cabbages or similar vegetation in dark green hues. This contrast between the cultivated land and the dominating architecture speaks to the encroachment of urban development into rural areas. What perhaps is most striking is Jansson's use of color and light. The swirling, dynamic sky, painted in a range of purples and blues, almost seems to be in motion, which gives the painting a dreamlike quality. This atmosphere is infused with a sense of calm yet poignant solitude, characteristic of Jansson’s works from his transition period focusing on landscapes and urban scenes."The Outskirts of the Town" encapsulates a moment in time at the turn of the 20th century, articulated through Jansson's distinctive use of color and his sensitivity to the interplay between man-made and natural environments.

Eugène Fredrik Jansson (18 March 1862, Stockholm – 15 June 1915, Skara) was a Swedish painter known for his night-time land- and cityscapes dominated by shades of blue. Towards the end of his life, from about 1904, he mainly painted male nudes. The earlier of these phases has caused him to sometimes be referred to as blåmålaren, "the blue-painter".
