More about this artwork

"Eugène Jansson's 'Söder Mälarstrand', painted in 1896, beautifully captures the serene yet haunting essence of Stockholm's waterfront during twilight. This artwork, renowned for its distinctive use of blue shades, showcases Jansson’s fascination with nocturnal landscapes and his innovative approach to light and color. The painting portrays a panoramic view of Mälarstrand, one of Stockholm’s urban shores, under the mystical glow of a fading sunset. The horizon is tinged with warm shades of red and orange, contrasting starkly against the deep, encompassing blues that dominate the scene. This vivid stripe of sunset infuses the scene with a dreamlike quality, suggesting the transient moment between day and night.Jansson's attention to detail is evident in the way he handles the reflections of the city lights in the water, suggesting the movement of the gentle waves. Buildings are silhouetted along the shore, their windows aglow with soft, inviting light that punctuates the encroaching darkness. The overall atmosphere of the painting is one of quiet contemplation, as if the viewer is invited to pause and absorb the tranquil yet dynamic interplay of light and shadow.

Eugène Fredrik Jansson (18 March 1862, Stockholm – 15 June 1915, Skara) was a Swedish painter known for his night-time land- and cityscapes dominated by shades of blue. Towards the end of his life, from about 1904, he mainly painted male nudes. The earlier of these phases has caused him to sometimes be referred to as blåmålaren, "the blue-painter".
