More about this artwork

"Eugène Jansson's Self-Portrait, painted in 1910, offers a vivid insight into the artist's persona and the thematic undertones that pervade his body of work. Jansson, primarily renowned for his nocturnal cityscapes of Stockholm bathed in blue hues, presents a departure from his typical subjects in this intriguing piece. Standing audaciously afore, the artist himself dominates the canvas, depicted in an elegant white suit and straw hat, contrasting sharply with the swirling blues and earthy tones of the background. With his resolute stance and direct gaze, Jansson exudes a sense of assured presence against the backdrop of classical sculptures. This juxtaposition may allude to a dialogue between the contemporary and the eternal, highlighting Jansson's modern identity amidst historical artistic tradition. The sculptures, evocative of Greek or Roman art, symbolize ideals of beauty and form, possibly mirroring Jansson’s own search for aesthetic perfection in his works. This self-portrait not only reveals Jansson's self-perception as a serious, modern artist but also invites viewers to ponder the relationship between the past and the present.

Eugène Fredrik Jansson (18 March 1862, Stockholm – 15 June 1915, Skara) was a Swedish painter known for his night-time land- and cityscapes dominated by shades of blue. Towards the end of his life, from about 1904, he mainly painted male nudes. The earlier of these phases has caused him to sometimes be referred to as blåmålaren, "the blue-painter".
