More about this artwork

Welcome to our online gallery. Among the treasured pieces of our collection is "Drie kinderen" (Three Children), a charming woodcut from 1910 by Lucien Pissarro. This piece offers a delightful glimpse into pastoral childhood and exemplifies Pissarro's skill in the graphic arts.In "Drie kinderen," Pissarro captures an intimate moment amongst three children in a lush garden setting under a starry sky. The composition focuses on the eldest child, a figure of nurturing calm, who intently reads from a book to the younger children beside her. This elder child's gentle lean towards her young listeners suggests a protective and guiding presence. The younger children, engrossed in the story, display gestures of attentive curiosity and quiet contemplation, adding to the serene atmosphere of the scene.Pissarro's use of bold contrasts and structured lines typical of woodcut techniques enhances the textural details of the scene—from the thick foliage in the background to the patterned adornments of the children's clothing. These elements harmoniously blend to create a feeling of simplicity and timelessness."Drie kinderen" not only reflects the familial and serene aspects of childhood but also showcases Lucien Pissarro's expertise in conveying depth and emotion through the challenging medium of woodcut.
