More about this artwork

"Moeder met kind" (Mother with Child) by Lucien Pissarro, painted in 1915, captures a tender and intimate moment between a mother and her child. The artwork, executed with delicate brushstrokes and a refined palette of soft colors, showcases Pissarro’s skill in portraying gentle domestic scenes. In this painting, we see the back view of a mother seated, holding her young child on her lap. The child, barely visible from this angle, leans comfortably against her. The mother's attention seems drawn towards something outside the frame, suggesting a moment of quiet contemplation or watchfulness. The scene is set against a simply portrayed interior background, where a red-brick wall fills the space, adding warmth to the composition. The mother's dress is adorned with a subtle cross pattern, which provides a textural contrast to the smoothness of her hair and the chair's wooden contour.Pissarro’s use of soft hues and a restrained approach lends a universality to the image, emphasizing the timeless and serene beauty of maternal affection. This artwork not only celebrates the bond between mother and child but also reflects the quiet moments of everyday life that are full of emotion and significance.
