More about this artwork

This remarkable artwork titled "Older Man in Profile" by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, executed around 1645-1650, showcases the artist’s mastery in the art of etching. The image intriguingly captures an elderly gentleman viewed in profile, engaged in the act of painting. However, there seems to be a mix-up in the description, as the artwork presented shows something rather different. What we can see in the image is a fantastical and allegorical scene featuring a satyr, or mythological creature, seated calmly beside a framed canvas, which in an unusual twist, is itself producing smoky plumes, obscuring part of the picture within it. The satyr, traditionally symbolic of human desires and unrefined aspects of humanity, interacts with a canvas that appears to depict a dark, possibly stormy seascape or shoreline. This scene can be understood as a metaphorical representation exploring themes of creativity, the blurring of art and reality, and perhaps the passage of time marked by the rendering of transient elements like smoke and temporary emotions. The presence of the varnish pot distinctly labeled 'VARNISH' alongside the canvas adds an intriguing element, suggesting the final stages of an artwork's completion, where the artist solidifies and protects the creation.Accompanying texts that enhance the depth of the image include inscriptions in Greek which authoritatively add to the ancient or timeless quality of the allegory, and an English verse that reads, "As Statues moulder into Worth...," further pointing towards themes of creation, decay, and the ultimate rebirth or transformation through artistic endeavor. Thus, Castiglione not only displays expert craftsmanship and detailed etching skills but also dives deep into the representation of complex philosophical musings, blending classical references with contemporary insights into the nature of art and existence.

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (23 March 1609 – 5 May 1664) was an Italian Baroque painter, printmaker and draftsman, of the Genoese school. He is best known now for his etchings, and as the inventor of the printmaking technique of monotyping. He was known as Il Grechetto in Italy and in France as Le Benédette.

He painted portraits, history paintings and landscapes, but came to specialize in rural scenes with more animals than human figures. Noah's ark and the animals entering the Ark was a favourite subject of his, and he devised a number of other new subjects from the early parts of the Old Testament with the patriarchs and their animals.
