More about this artwork

Titled "Painted by Himself", this intriguing artwork by Jehan Georges Vibert showcases the artist's keen eye for detail and his penchant for satire, particularly directed toward the clergy. In this scene, three ecclesiastical figures are depicted in a richly decorated room, filled with ornate furniture, luxurious fabrics, and artistic treasures. On the left, a cardinal stands dramatically pointing at a portrait, which humorously appears to be his own image. His expression and gesture suggest a whimsical, perhaps slightly vainglorious moment, as he seems to be either proudly presenting the portrait to his companions or engaging in a lighthearted boast about his likeness. The central figure, clad in white papal attire, looks on with a smile, raising his hand in a gesture that may indicate delight or surprise. His demeanor adds a layer of amiability and perhaps subtle complicity in the moment's humor. To his right, another cardinal in deep purple listens intently, leaning forward as if to share a private joke or comment. The painting is rich in symbolism and narrative, hinting at the vanity often associated with positions of power and the human quirks that unify us all, regardless of rank or role. The detailed background, from the sumptuous wallpaper to the elaborately draped curtains and the reflective floor, all contribute to creating a vivid, almost theatrical setting that enhances the storytelling of the scene.

Jehan Georges Vibert or Jean Georges Vibert was a French academic painter.

He was born in Paris, the son of engraver and publisher Théodore Vibert, and grandson of the influential rose-breeder Jean-Pierre Vibert. He began his artistic training at a young age under the instruction of his maternal grandfather, engraver Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet. Vibert was more interested in painting than engraving and entered the studio of Félix-Joseph Barrias and eventually the École des Beaux-Arts when he was sixteen. He remained at the École for six years under the instruction of historic painter François-Edouard Picot.
