More about this artwork

We invite you to explore the masterful painting "Tough Medicine" by the renowned French artist Jehan Georges Vibert, a captivating visual narrative that delves into themes of duty, reluctance, and care within ecclesiastical life. The scene presents an elderly cardinal, dressed in vivid red that starkly contrasts with the muted tones of his surroundings, deeply engrossed in a book. His expression, a mixture of focus and slight irritation, suggests that he is perhaps more interested in his reading than in what is occurring around him. Beside him stands a nurse, her figure clad in traditional attire, offering a spoonful of medicine. Her expression is firm and unyielding, indicating her determination to perform her duty, irrespective of the cardinal’s displeasure. The interior setting features richly detailed elements such as a decorative tapestry and a luxurious green chair, symbolizing the cardinal’s high status. However, these symbols of authority and comfort starkly juxtapose the mundane and humbling act of taking medicine, introducing a layer of irony to the narrative."Tough Medicine" not only showcases Vibert’s skill in creating vivid, character-rich scenes but also reflects his keen insight into human nature and societal roles. This painting is a brilliant exploration of the contrasts between power and vulnerability, duty and resistance, making it a significant piece in the realm of narrative art.

Jehan Georges Vibert or Jean Georges Vibert was a French academic painter.

He was born in Paris, the son of engraver and publisher Théodore Vibert, and grandson of the influential rose-breeder Jean-Pierre Vibert. He began his artistic training at a young age under the instruction of his maternal grandfather, engraver Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet. Vibert was more interested in painting than engraving and entered the studio of Félix-Joseph Barrias and eventually the École des Beaux-Arts when he was sixteen. He remained at the École for six years under the instruction of historic painter François-Edouard Picot.
