More about this artwork

"View on the Outskirts of Caen" is a captivating landscape painting by French artist Stanislas Lépine, created between 1872 and 1875. This work of art delicately captures the serene and bucolic beauty of the rural areas surrounding the city of Caen, located in the Normandy region of France. In the painting, Lépine employs a subtle palette to portray a peaceful village scene. The foreground features a quaint house with a distinct, sloping roof, nestled amid lush greenery and shaded by mature trees. The pathway curving gently beside the house invites the viewer into the scene, leading their eye towards a cluster of small buildings that enhance the sense of quiet village life.Further in the distance, the landscape opens to a broad view of rolling hills and open fields, beneath a wide, expressive sky that manifests a play of light and shadow among the clouds. This distant background hints at the expansive nature of the rural landscape, suggesting a timeless tranquility that contrasts with the enclosed, intimate feeling of the foreground.Lépine's brushwork subtly blends the natural elements, from the dense foliage to the textured roofs of the buildings, creating a cohesive and immersive atmosphere. The overall effect is one of harmony and peaceful coexistence between man and nature, portrayed with the artist’s characteristic sensitivity to light and atmospheric effects.

Stanislas Victor Edouard Lépine was a French painter who specialized in landscapes, especially views of the Seine.

Lépine was born in Caen. An important influence in his artistic formation was Corot, whom he met in Normandy in 1859, becoming his student the following year.

Lépine's favorite subject was the Seine, which he was to paint in all its aspects for the rest of his life.
