More about this artwork

Delve into the serene beauty of nature captured in Roelant Savery's enchanting painting, "Landscape with Swans Near a Waterfall". This masterpiece, painted in the early 17th century, showcases Savery's incredible skill in rendering detailed and lively natural scenes. The painting unfolds a tranquil woodland scene, dominated by a group of graceful swans at its center. These majestic birds, painted with meticulous attention to detail and realism, are depicted amidst their natural habitat. Several swans are seen nestling comfortably in the shade provided by rocky overhangs, while others are depicted in the gentle embrace of the water.Adding to the allure of this landscape is a charming waterfall on the right-hand side of the painting, its cascading waters breathing life into the scene. The waterfall, depicted with dynamic brush strokes, contrasts with the stillness of the swans and adds a vibrant energy to the tableau. The lush foliage, ranging from towering trees to delicate ferns, frames this idyllic gathering point for the swans, creating a secluded nook that feels untouched by time. Subtle hints of wildlife and the distant, soft hues of the skyline further emphasize the harmony and peaceful coexistence within this natural setting.Roelant Savery's "Landscape with Swans Near a Waterfall" is not just a visual feast; it's a gentle reminder of the tranquil beauty that nature holds.

Roelant Savery (or Roeland(t) Maertensz Saverij, or de Savery, or many variants) was a Flanders-born Dutch Golden Age painter.

Savery was born in Kortrijk. Like so many other artists, he belonged to an Anabaptist family that fled north from the Spanish-occupied Southern Netherlands when Roelant was about 4 years old and settled in Haarlem around 1585. He was taught painting by his older brother Jacob Savery (c. 1565 – 1603) and Hans Bol.
