More about this artwork

"Le Déluge" is a captivating oil painting by the Flemish artist Roelant Savery, dated to the early 17th century. This dramatic artwork depicts the biblical story of Noah's Flood, a pivotal moment from the Book of Genesis. Savery's interpretation of this cataclysmic event is both vivid and intense, drawing viewers into the chaos and despair experienced by those caught in the deluge. In the painting, dark storm clouds loom ominously over a turbulent landscape swamped by floodwaters. The central focus is a throng of desperate figures—men, women, children, and a diverse range of animals—all striving to find refuge from the rising waters. The emotions on the faces of these figures range from terror to resignation, capturing the human condition in the face of disaster. To the left, some individuals are attempting to climb trees to escape the water, their actions marked by a frantic urgency. In the middle distance, a small boat can be seen, one of the few hopeful elements in an otherwise bleak scene, suggesting a glimmer of survival amidst the devastation. The distant city, partially submerged, serves as a stark reminder of the widespread impact of the flood.Roelant Savery's use of dark, moody colors enhances the sense of impending doom, while his attention to detail in the depiction of both the human and animal figures adds a poignant touch to the narrative. Each element in "Le Déluge" works together to create a powerful portrayal of one of mythology's most dramatic stories. This painting not only showcases Savery's skill as a master of landscape and emotion but also serves as a profound meditation on vulnerability, resilience, and the human spirit's capacity to endure.

Roelant Savery (or Roeland(t) Maertensz Saverij, or de Savery, or many variants) was a Flanders-born Dutch Golden Age painter.

Savery was born in Kortrijk. Like so many other artists, he belonged to an Anabaptist family that fled north from the Spanish-occupied Southern Netherlands when Roelant was about 4 years old and settled in Haarlem around 1585. He was taught painting by his older brother Jacob Savery (c. 1565 – 1603) and Hans Bol.
