More about this artwork

Roelant Savery's "Seated Man" (1606–1608) is an intriguing artwork that captures the essence of character and mood through thoughtful draughtsmanship. This exquisite drawing features an elderly man seated on the ground, draped in a voluminous, textured cloak that envelops his body, revealing only his rugged boots and a small portion of his trousers. His face, characterized by deep wrinkles and a full, flowing beard, is marked by an expression that suggests contemplation or fatigue. Wearing a soft cap, his gaze seems to drift away from the viewer, adding a sense of introspection or distant thought. The artist’s meticulous attention to detail is evident in the varied line weights and the delicate shading that bring out the folds of the man’s garments and the rough texture of his beard. Savery's use of perspective and composition enhances the figure's imposing presence, yet there is an undeniable gentleness in the portrayal, emphasized by the rounded forms and the soft contour lines. This drawing not only serves as a showcase for Savery's skill in rendering human figures but also offers a window into the everyday life and attire of his era. "Seated Man" is more than a simple study; it is a narrative piece that invites viewers to ponder the story and emotions of the portrayed character.

Roelant Savery (or Roeland(t) Maertensz Saverij, or de Savery, or many variants) was a Flanders-born Dutch Golden Age painter.

Savery was born in Kortrijk. Like so many other artists, he belonged to an Anabaptist family that fled north from the Spanish-occupied Southern Netherlands when Roelant was about 4 years old and settled in Haarlem around 1585. He was taught painting by his older brother Jacob Savery (c. 1565 – 1603) and Hans Bol.
