More about this artwork

In the exquisite painting "Landscape with the Flight into Egypt," created in 1624 by Flemish artist Roelant Savery, viewers are transported into a richly detailed natural scene embellished with a tapestry of animals and landscapes, which captures a significant biblical moment. This artwork reflects the journey of the Holy Family as they flee into Egypt escaping the massacre decreed by King Herod.Dominating the foreground is a lush, vibrant depiction of flora and fauna. Savery's meticulous brushwork highlights a variety of animals, from grazing cattle and goats to a stork beside the stream, showcasing his renowned skill in painting both wildlife and botanical details. Not merely decorative, these animals bring the landscape to life with vitality and naturalism. The painting also subtly incorporates the biblical narrative. The Holy Family can be seen on the left-hand side, with Joseph leading a donkey on which Mary and the infant Jesus are seated, though they merge unobtrusively into the scene, almost secondary to the grandeur of nature around them.Adding to the mystique, the ruins that protrude from the forestry add a layer of historical dimension and depth. Their crumbling forms rise against the serene sky, perhaps symbolizing both the decay of old ideologies and the enduring nature of divine protection.Savery's work is a masterful integration of religious narrative and natural landscape, inviting the viewer to explore a scene wherein the natural world and divine providence exist in harmonious interplay.

Roelant Savery (or Roeland(t) Maertensz Saverij, or de Savery, or many variants) was a Flanders-born Dutch Golden Age painter.

Savery was born in Kortrijk. Like so many other artists, he belonged to an Anabaptist family that fled north from the Spanish-occupied Southern Netherlands when Roelant was about 4 years old and settled in Haarlem around 1585. He was taught painting by his older brother Jacob Savery (c. 1565 – 1603) and Hans Bol.
