More about this artwork

Jozef Israëls, a master of emotion and sensitivity in Dutch art, brings to viewers a peaceful rural scene in his painting titled "Landschap met een koe en een boer" (Landscape with a Cow and a Farmer). Created during a period renowned for its rich contribution to the realism movement, Israëls captivates with his subtle and tender portrayal of daily life in the countryside. The composition of this artwork gently draws in the observer's eye, featuring a cow and a farmer, each depicted in harmonious existence within their natural surroundings. The cow, centrally positioned within the canvas, stands calmly, grazing or perhaps having a drink near a water trough, symbolizing the essence of rural life. Next to it, a farmer, leaning against a fence, appears lost in thought, perhaps contemplating the day’s work or enjoying a moment of introspective solitude. This painting is distinguished by its soft, watercolor palette, expressing the cool tones of greens and earthy browns which evoke a sense of tranquility and connection to the earth. Israëls' loose brushwork gives an impressionistic feel, suggesting the transient light and shadows of a passing day."Landschap met een koe en een boer" is more than just a depiction of a simple moment; it is a reflection on the timeless rhythm of nature and human life, capturing an eternal truth about the human condition in harmony with nature.

Jozef Israëls was a Dutch painter. He was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century".

He was born in Groningen, of Jewish parents. His father, Hartog Abraham Israëls, intended for him to be a businessman, and it was only after a determined struggle that he was allowed to embark on an artistic career. He studied initially from 1835 to 1842 at the Minerva Academy in his home town Groningen.
