More about this artwork

Lawrence Alma-Tadema's evocative 1872 painting, "The Death of the Pharaoh’s Firstborn Son," captures a deeply emotional and tragic scene inspired by the biblical story from the Book of Exodus. In this painting, the artist invites viewers into a dimly lit chamber of the Egyptian palace where an intense drama unfolds.Central to the composition is a grief-stricken woman, presumably the child's mother, who clutches her lifeless son in a poignant embrace. The boy's limp body and pale complexion contrast starkly with the rich, warm tones of the surrounding environment, underscoring the finality of death.Around them, the scene is populated with other figures, each absorbed in their own sorrow. A man, likely the Pharaoh, sits in quiet devastation, his head bowed and hands clasped, the weight of the moment evident in his posture. Other attendants and possibly family members are depicted in various states of despair and shock. The environment is richly detailed with Egyptian motifs and artifacts, which Alma-Tadema meticulously rendered to enhance the authenticity and mood of the scene. The flickering light of candles adds a somber luminosity, playing across the surfaces of ornate furniture and hieroglyph-adorned walls, highlighting the opulence of the setting and the magnitude of the loss. This painting is a masterful example of Alma-Tadema’s skill in portraying complex human emotions and historical scenes with both precision and empathy.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a Dutch painter of special British denizenship. Born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands, and trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium, he settled in England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there. A classical-subject painter, he became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean Sea and sky. Alma-Tadema was considered one of the most popular Victorian painters.
