More about this artwork

"Proclaiming Claudius Emperor, Opus XLVIII" is a captivating historical painting by the renowned Dutch artist, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, created in 1867. This artwork is an exquisite representation of a pivotal moment in ancient Rome, where Claudius, depicted as the central figure in the scene, is proclaimed emperor by the Praetorian Guard after the assassination of his nephew Caligula. The painting dramatically captures the hesitation and almost reluctant acceptance of Claudius, who is shown hidden behind a richly decorated curtain, his right hand hesitantly reaching out towards one of his future subjects. His expression and posture convey a mix of surprise and fear, highlighting the suddenness of his ascension to power.Surrounding Claudius are figures of Roman soldiers, their detailed armor and vibrant red plumes adding a sense of urgency and movement to the scene. The soldiers' varied expressions of excitement, anticipation, and determination reflect the chaotic atmosphere of the moment. Alma-Tadema's attention to detail not only in the characters but also in the architectural elements and interior decorations, like the intricate patterns on the curtains and columns, enhances the authenticity and immersive quality of the work. This painting is a masterpiece of historical narrative, capturing the tension and drama of an unexpected turn in Roman history with exquisite detail and emotional depth.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a Dutch painter of special British denizenship. Born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands, and trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium, he settled in England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there. A classical-subject painter, he became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean Sea and sky. Alma-Tadema was considered one of the most popular Victorian painters.
