More about this artwork

"The Collector of Pictures at the Time of Augustus," a stunning painting by the eminent 19th-century artist Lawrence Alma-Tadema, offers a compelling glimpse into the opulent world of art collection in ancient Rome. Crafted in 1867, this artwork showcases Alma-Tadema's exceptional ability to encapsulate the architectural and societal nuances of bygone eras with astonishing precision and artistry. This painting vividly unfolds within an elaborately decorated Roman atrium, where the walls are adorned with an array of classical paintings and sculptures, indicating the collector’s refined taste and wealth. The collector, presumably a figure of high societal standing during the reign of Emperor Augustus, is engaged in a lively interaction with artists and connoisseurs. Their draped, colorful garments and the intricate mosaic floor exemplify Roman fashion and interior design, adding layers of authenticity and visual interest to the scene.Central to the composition is a group of figures, each demonstrating varied expressions and gestures that suggest a deep engagement with the art around them. A woman in the foreground, draped in textural whites and grays, leans eagerly forward, her attention possibly caught by a particular art piece or an ongoing discussion. Adjacent to her, a man, whose focus is directed towards a canvas, possibly critiques or admires a work in progress. This painting is not only a tribute to the cultural richness of Augustan Rome but also a testament to Alma-Tadema’s meticulous research and mastery over historical narratives, rendered through his brush.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a Dutch painter of special British denizenship. Born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands, and trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium, he settled in England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there. A classical-subject painter, he became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean Sea and sky. Alma-Tadema was considered one of the most popular Victorian painters.
